Referral Link or Typed Code? Why Sign-Up Attribution Sometimes Fails
Referral rewards depend on the exchange correctly linking your account to a referrer. Learn why links and codes sometimes fail to attach, and how to confirm attribution before you deposit.
Multiple exchanges | the reader's region | the reader's funding currency | referral terms and fee claims
Most exchange referral programmes work in one of two ways: you follow a referral link that pre-fills a code, or you type a code during registration. Both usually work, yet many people discover after depositing that no referrer was recorded. The causes are mundane: a browser that stripped the link parameters, an app installed separately from the link, a code typed with a missing character, or registration completed on a different device. This guide explains these pitfalls on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget and how to confirm attribution early.
How links can lose the referral
A referral link carries the code in the address. Privacy settings, link shorteners, in-app browsers and copying only part of the address can drop it. If you click a link on your phone but then install the app from the store and register there, the app may not know about the link. Before submitting your registration, look for the referral or invitation field and check that the code is filled in.
Typing codes reliably
When entering a code manually, copy it rather than retyping if possible, and check every character. Some codes are case sensitive and mix similar-looking characters. The field may be collapsed under an optional section on mobile screens. Complete registration on the same device and session where you entered the code, rather than starting on one device and finishing on another.
Confirming before you deposit
After registration, look in the rewards or referral area of your account for confirmation that a referrer is attached. If nothing appears, contact support through the official help centre before depositing or trading. Many exchanges cannot add a referral after the account is created, but asking early gives the best chance of a helpful answer and clarifies what is possible.
Reading terms and avoiding fake offers
Referral rewards come with conditions such as eligible regions, verification level, deposit or trading requirements and expiry dates. Read them in each exchange's official help centre. Be wary of anyone promising unusually large rewards in exchange for sending funds to them or sharing login details. A genuine referral never requires either.
Risk boundary: Exchange Cost Lab
Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
Scenario checkpoint
- Check the invitation field is filled in before submitting your registration.
- Finish registration on the same device and session where the code was entered.
- Confirm the referrer appears in your rewards area before making a deposit.
- Read regional eligibility and expiry terms in the official help centre first.
